Anyone use their sniffer to figure out their soil? I'm sure our dogs could tell us something about our soil that we didn't know... Our noses arent as good and mine certainly isnt but still thought I'd research it (how soil should or shouldn't smell).
Other than for the dreaded smell of a rotting pumpkin, is anyone using their nose out in the patch?
Weird question maybe. But sometimes I just dont know a dang thing until I ask.

I do smell my soil too and I'm sure many other growers do as well. I like that nice fresh smell of good dirt!!

It would be an interesting event to invite everyone to bring a soil sample to a club meeting to see how one's own soil looks, smells, feels, compared to everyone else's, especially the club's top grower. Not scientific but it would help give some sensory reference point. It might give the new growers some perspective.

Like nothing you've ever smelt before, but not anything you instantly turn away from. In fact, you'd like to smell it again if you have time, perhaps an 'earthy' smell, log it in as 'nothing to smell, here' and go on about your business. I am more apt to use my Super-Sniffer at SS Mix/sprouting time and if that doesn't smell right, (opposite of the above) out that goes, if it is in actual use. I have not tried to evaluate the native soil's constituents from it, though. I'd expect excessive sulfur to be rather loud, butt I do not know, lol. eg
